Finally… Cat Training Made Easy!
If you have a smartypants cat who wants to explore and play, your cat may be trainable. Do you want to train your cat? If so, here are some things you need and may choose to use. Ingredients to a good Kitty Cookie:
Needed: Treats, ideas, a cat, and things that revolve around the type of training you wish to teach
Optional: A clicker, cat toys, cat nip, and/or a book of training.
TRAINING YOUR CAT is easy enough, if you have certain materials. Cat training works because the cat remembers that particular behaviors are rewarded with treats, catnip, toys, praise, and/or petting. Certain visual and audio cues tell the cat that it’s time to do the behaviors. There are several types of training. The types are easily combined.
COMBINED TRAINING is a very good way for kids to train cats. It’s easy, and Kitty catches on easily enough. Teaching the cat to sit in a particular place, such as a scented mat, or a blanket, is easy. Here is an easy technique to train a cat to sit on a grooming mat (or something else that strikes your cat’s fancy). Simply put out the mat to start. Have a treat ready. On the mat, place a small pinch of catnip, toy, treat, or something pleasing to the cat (not an insect or living animal because it could go away. Then, put the cat in the room and gently shut the door. If that cat doesn’t sit on the mat, pat the mat or put the cat on the mat. Give Kitty a treat now! If you have all the materials, give the cat an approving click of the clicker. You can also offer a toy on the mat for the cat to play with ON THE MAT. If the toy isn’t on the mat, you are practically telling Kitty to get off! If you’re using A TOWEL OR GROOMING MAT, you can FOLLOW BY GROOMING KITTY if she likes it. Otherwise, pet and praise Kitty. Practice often and your cat will learn to perform the trick!
CLICKER TRAINING is a fun way to train Kitty. Does Kitty like catchy noises and to play? Is your cat active? If yes to either, it’s a good idea to clicker train her. Obviously, you’ll need a clicker and treats. For this trick, a toy or two is also essential. Before you begin, make sure that all toys like the one you are using are out of Kitty’s view and up high. Then, gather one or two of the toys you secured and the clicker and treats. The trick is to train the cat to PICK UP THE TOY IN HER MOUTH AND WALK. THIS IS ALSO HOW TO TRAIN A CAT TO FETCH. Throw the toy(s). Shake them if they are shiny, make noise, reflect light, etcetera. Toys of the above work best. Kitty should chase the toy. If you threw it especially high, chances are she will run, jump, and catch it in midair. If the toy in her paws is very interesting, entertaining, and exciting, chances are she will bite it. If she bites it, quickly click the clicker. DON’T THROW HER A TREAT YET! The cat might drop the toy. When the cat hears the clicks, she will either stop pouncing or drop the toy. If she stops pouncing and begins to walk, take the toy and throw again. Practice and she will be trained! Otherwise, still throw the toy more. Soon, Kitty will be used to it and behave. Once she’s successfully performed the trick a few times and dropped the toy, throw the treat. Now she’s trained!
TREAT TRAINING is a great one for cats that are always hungry. Your cat will discover that certain behaviors cause a treat. DON’T USE THIS METHOD FOR FEEDING THE CAT! This is one you can use the above for, grooming, and making up your own. Use similar methods for Combined Training and Clicker Training, except use a treat instead. Have fun!
